The 10 Usability Heuristics in Interface Design: a compass for creating experiences

In a downtown café, two designers were debating over a screen that nobody could quite understand. A button that looked like a link. A menu that hid behind an unexpected gesture. An interaction that, far from surprising, caused frustration. What they had in their hands was not just an exercise in style: it was a common symptom in many digital products that forget an essential principle — the people who use what we design deserve clarity, predictability, and respect for their time.

In 1990, Jakob Nielsen and Rolf Molich proposed a set of principles that, over the years, have become a shared language for designers, researchers, and product teams: the usability heuristics. They are not rigid rules, nor are they magic recipes; they are wise observations on how to navigate a changing landscape. They are, essentially, cognitive shortcuts that help us evaluate an interface through the user’s eyes.

Far from being a dogma, these heuristics function as a compass during interface design and evaluation. Each of them holds a simple question: Does this help or hinder the person interacting with my design? The value lies right there — in finding clear answers to seemingly simple questions.

1. Visibility of system status

An interface must keep the person informed at all times. If a process takes time, a loading indicator is not decorative: it is a promise of attention. If an action is performed, the system must clearly confirm it. When what is happening “feels invisible,” it breeds anxiety and confusion.

2. Match between system and the real world

Digital products work best when they speak the same language as their users. Using technical terms instead of familiar concepts is the equivalent of asking someone to read a map without a legend. Usability flourishes when metaphors and concepts are recognizable.

3. User control and freedom

A person does not always know which path they will take in an interface, and that uncertainty is natural. Therefore, offering exits like “undo” or “go back” is not just a matter of courtesy, but of psychological safety. The best interactions feel like exploring, not like falling into traps.

4. Consistency and standards

When patterns are repeated, the brain does not need to reinvent how to act on every screen. Consistency is not monotony: it is respect for the memory and attention of those who use your product. Starting to design without a common vocabulary is, inevitably, designing friction.

5. Error prevention

An interface that easily allows mistakes and does not help avoid them is wasting its greatest asset: context. Designing to prevent errors means reducing ambiguity, clarifying options, and anticipating misunderstandings. Sometimes, the best error message is the one that never needs to be shown.

6. Recognition rather than recall

The less a person has to memorize, the better they can focus on their goals. Reducing cognitive load means showing relevant information when it is needed, not requiring it to be retained from the previous step. Less “What did it say…?” and more “Here is what you need right now.”

7. Flexibility and efficiency of use

Interfaces are not static: those who use them can be beginners or experts. Allowing shortcuts, gestures, or personalizations not only accelerates repetitive tasks, but also empowers those who want to go beyond the basics. Efficiency is not elitist; it is a form of respect for time.

8. Aesthetic and minimalist design

Every element on a screen competes for attention. If something does not add value, it distracts. Aesthetics in usability is not just about being “pretty,” but about being essential: removing noise to amplify what is useful. The visual and the functional converge when simplicity does not sacrifice necessary information.

9. Help users recognize, diagnose, and recover from errors

Error messages should not sound like judgments: they are opportunities to guide. A good error message explains what happened and how to resolve it. Turning a stumble into a useful direction transforms frustration into learning.

10. Help and documentation

Not all interactions can be foreseen, and that is where contextual help makes sense. Well-placed documentation, clear examples, or just-in-time suggestions can make the difference between getting stuck or moving forward with confidence.

Connection to Laws of UX

In practice, these heuristics are not applied one by one, like boxes on a checklist. They function as lenses to observe an interface, to converse with it from the perspective of the person using it. More than absolute answers, they offer a guide to asking sharper questions.

Designing with usability in mind is not a luxury: it is a form of responsibility toward the people who interact with what we create. And, in a world where digital experiences are part of our daily lives, that responsibility begins and ends with every decision we make when designing.

While usability heuristics focus on how to evaluate and improve an interface through general interaction principles, Laws of UX contains psychological laws that explain how we perceive, remember, group, and prioritize information in both digital and real-world contexts.

Integrating both perspectives allows you not only to fix visible problems but also to understand why they occur and how humans process information, leading to more natural, predictable, and inclusive designs, aligning cognitive science with design practice.
